GENRE

T J Newman Falling Brilliant 1st Novel. Written by an airline hostess. You're the pilot of a passenger jet flying from LAX to JFK and you get a face-time message "Crash this aircraft into a target we give you, or we will slaughter your wife and children." How do you respond to a terrorist who is NOT on the aircraft with you?
Michael Lewis The Premonition How we SHOULD have handled the COVID pandemic.
Malcolm Gladwell The Bomber Mafia Leading up to WW2, most military thinkers viewed the airplane as an afterthought. But a small group of idealistic strategists, the "Bomber Mafia" asked: "What if precision bombing could cripple the enemy and make war less lethal?" Gen Curtis LeMay took the opposite approach with the bombing of Tokyo - brutal pragmatism and scorched-earth tactics.
Patrick Keefe Empire of Pain How the Sackler Family made $35billion from Oxy in 10 years and turned thousands of Americans into adicts.
Michael Cohen Disloyal Wonderful book. Reads like a novel. Great writing style.
Anonymous A Warning Inside the Trump White House
David Enrich Dark Towers Donald Trump and Deutsche Bank
James Comey A Higher Loyalty Why did Comey torpedo Hilary's presidential bid and why did Trump fire him?
Andrew MacDonald The Turner Diaries 1978 by William Luther Pierce - American neo-Nazi, white supremacist and antisemitic author. Novel depicting a violent revolution in the USA, overthrow of the federal government, nuclear war inside the USA and ultimately a race war which leads to the systematic extermination of non-whites. The "bible" of white supremacists. Disturbing in the light of Jan 6, 2021
Bob Woodward Rage Interesting book. I didn't like the journalistic style of writing. Nevertheless, the content was elucidating.
Omid Scobie & Carolyn Durand Finding Freedom Harry and Megan and why they bailed on the Royal Family. Tough being the younger brother when the older is the heir and you're the spare.
Webb Hubbell "Friends in High Places", "When Men Betray", "Ginger Snaps", "A Game of Inches", "Eighteenth Green", "East End" Novels with a legal and courtroom theme. Webb Hubbell was a lawyer in Arkansas, Mayor of Little Rock, Arkansas Supreme Court Chief Justice, friend of the Clintons, fall-guy in Whitewater and possibly the only person to travel on Air Force One and Con Air in the same year. Great series of books, entertaining and educational about the US legal system.
Victor Methos *Shotgun Lawyer, *Neon Lawyer, *Gambler's Jury, *Invisible Client Novels with a courtroom theme covering controversial subjects like gun-manufacturer liability for mass-shootings with military-style weapons, drug-company liability, the "black-test" used by food companies to evaluate cost-of-recall versus cost of claim-payouts. Really fascinating stuff and very easy reading.
Paul Brickhill Reach for the Sky Douglas Bader was a legend in his lifetime. After losing both legs in an air crash in 1931 and being dismissed as a cripple by the Royal Air Force, he fought his way back into the cockpit of a Spitfire to become not only one of the RAF's top combat pilots but a squadron leader and innovator of fighter tactics that helped win the Battle of Britain. (I had the honor of meeting Douglas Bader in South Africa C.1966 and know 2 other Battle of Britain Spitfire pilots in my hometown Hermanus, South Africa - Bruce Stewart)
Nelson DeMille Mayday What happens when the military accidentally fires a test-missile into a passenger airliner at 62,000 ft and you end up with 300 brain-damaged zombies? Do you fire another missile and pay death-benefits on a missing plane, or do you bring the plane home, admit your mistake and pay many more millions in life-time care?
Byron Farwell The Great Boer War The beginning of the end of the British Empire. A war between the British Empire and two South African, largely agricultural, republics. A war where more women and children died in concentration camps than combatant deaths on both sides.
Michael Wolff Fire & Fury What can I say? Regardless of where you stand politically, it's a "must read".
E.L James Fifty Shades Trilogy No excuses. I just had to see what all the hype was about. It led to some rather interesting conversations which I found .... enlightening!
Boris Johnson The Churchill Factor A colorful account of a colorful man by a colorful writer. Delightfully entertaining.
Malcolm Gladwell David & Goliath Are disadvantages like ADHD, dyslexia, bi-polar disorders, single family homes, family loss, racism really disadvantages? Or are they the fires that create the finest steel?
Sebastian Junger Tribe : On Homecoming & Belonging An examination of disbanded brothers returning to a divided country. Today's veterans often come home to find that, although they're willing to die for their country, they're not sure how to live for it. Essential reading!
Daniel James Brown The Boys in the Boat Best book I've read in years. Beautifully written narative of how the Washington rowing-eight rose to fame and Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. A real page-turner and a must-read.
Omar Nasiri

Inside the Jihad: My Life with Al Qaeda

Omar Nasiri worked as a secret agent for Europe's top foreign intelligence services-including France's DGSE  and Britain's MI5 and MI6. From the netherworld of Islamist cells in Belgium, to the training camps of Afghanistan, to the radical mosques of London, he risked his life to defeat the emerging global network that the West would come to know as Al Qaeda. Nasiri shares the story of his life balanced precariously between the world of Islamic jihadists and the spies who pursue them. As an Arab and a Muslim, he was able to infiltrate the rigidly controlled Afghan training camps, where he encountered men who would later be known as the most-wanted terrorists on earth: Ibn al-Sheikh al-Libi, Abu Zubayda, and Abu Khabab al-Masri.
Salahuddin Khan Sikander 1986 - A 17-year-old Pakistani student, Sikander, is enamored with America and longs to live there. But enraged after a quarrel with parents he decides to leave home. After meeting visiting Afghan mujahideen he joins their struggle against the Soviets in Afghanistan. Along with fighting, he finds love, just as US-supplied weapons bring victory to hand. Marrying his love, he returns with her to Pakistan, becoming an entrepreneur there. But when 9/11 happens, Sikander must return to Afghanistan to help escaping relatives, placing him on a collision course with the country in which he still yearns to live--America

The Covenant

The history of South Africa in a novel - recommended reading for anyone who is interested in the background to Apartheid and a country founded upon the tenets of the Old Testament.

Kenneth Timmerman Preachers of Hate: Islam & the War on America Disturbing, to say the least. But if you want an international perspective on Islam, you really should read this. Not an easy read, but worth the effort.
Bethany McLean & Peter Elkind The Smartest Guys in the Room The full story behind the rise and fall of Enron. Much of the financial shenanigans were beyond my financial knowledge, but still a fascinating, albeit difficult, read.

Jeremy Scahill Blackwater - the rise of the world's most powerful mercenary army Quite a shocking book. Perhaps something that Americans should be ashamed of?
Marcus Luttrell with Patrick Robinson Lone Survivor - the lost heroes of Seal Team 10 Forget about the ethics of why we're there. A fascinating account of the indomitability of man. Hemingway said that man can be destroyed but never defeated ... perhaps this was what he meant.
